Steinar – Chief of the Longtail trolls in 2003

Every year on midsummer night at Troll Mountain just next to Trollhufsa village, there is a solemn ceremony. All the trolls – big and small – attend dressed in their finest clothes. For this is the magical evening when the Longtail trolls elect their chief. It happens every year, and every year a new troll gets the honourable title. But of course, any troll that wants the title of chief has to earn it.

This year, Steinar was chosen as chief. Steinar is a very brave and intrepid troll that saved Trollhufsa village with his shrewdness and courage.

The humans in the valley were going to build a dam in the river. The animals came to the trolls because they were being hunted from their regular haunts. Even the trolls could no longer stay by the river when there was a risk that the humans would see them. Many humans plodded around with important looks on their faces and big plans, and on a few occasions came dangerously close to walking right through Trollhufsa village. The Longtail trolls were truly saddened by the idea that the humans could destroy the lovely river and the surrounding woods! But brave Steinar had an answer. Steinar’s magical ability is that he can change into anything he likes – a veritable master of disguise. With perfect timing, he changed into a beaver, and gnawed to bits all the logs that were going to be used to build the dam, to the despair of the humans! Steinar then used his star-turn. With a wave of his magic tail he turned himself into an elderly woman complete with mink collar and elegant, pointy, high-heeled shoes. Thus disguised, he was able to go into all the public offices in the human village where he raised such a fuss and bother about the building of the dam that the important officials had to do as they were told in order to avoid a scandal. Steinar was smart too and took some gold from Troll Mountain with him so that when he’d finished telling the greedy humans off, he bought the land where the dam was to be built. And so in the end no dam was built and the trolls, animals and nature were left in peace.

There was a great celebration among the animals and trolls when Steinar returned with the good news. Thanks to Steinar’s brave efforts the woods and the river were left in peace. So – there was no doubt over which troll deserved to be chief this year: Steinar, the Longtail trolls' brave master of disguise.
